We Found Cheap Campgrounds In Central Illinois For RV Camping

Finding cheap rv campgrounds means different things to rvers. For us, there are two types of cheap rving we do – we set up shop for months in one location, and hope to find an affordable place to park our Bounder OR we are in travel mode and are trying to do it as cost effectively as possible. Both scenarios require a lot of planning, research, phone calls and reviewing. We recently left our site in Mahomet, Illinois (a private, wooded 5 acre site we found by advertising our needs on craigslist!) to visit family over Labor Day in Effingham, Illinois. We had to stay at a campground one night to have mobile rv repair done…so “cheap” options were limited, but the next day it was family time.   When we arrived in Effingham, we stayed in our family’s driveway for the weekend. Our destination at the end of the … Continue reading

Joey Arrives In Cerro Gordo, Illinois – Our Full Time Winter RVing Spot

Hi Folks! Joey, the Fleetwood Bounder here, letting you know that we all arrived safe and sound in Cerro Gordo, Illinois. This will be our main home base throughout the winter. Yes, before signing up for this job, I heard from my cousin, Ward, that Jim and Robin aren’t known for taking the easy path. While most rvers head south for the winter, these fools choose the cold and snow. However, they did survive full time winter rving in the Rockies last year, so I’m sure they won’t let me freeze to death. That said, my cousin was Canadian, and I am Australian. I’m not used to this whole “freezing” concept – hope I make it through. For now, the weather is mild, so we have time to prepare for the cold and the snow. When we pulled into this small rv campground, 4 of the 6 sites had rvers. … Continue reading

RVing From Wahpeton, ND Zoo To Rochester, Minnesota

OCTOBER 11, 2011 WAHPETON, ND ZOO TO ROCHESTER, MN – STARTING MILEAGE 109,390 / ENDING MILEAGE 109,728 G’day Mates! We are on the road again. My owners are thrilled that I have got them this far, in one piece, with no surprises or breakdowns out in the bush. We left the zoo, again taking the back roads, following 9 to 12 to 71, then getting lost for a bit, then finding our campground in the dark, but getting lost again. It was a long drive today and everyone was as cranky as a crocodile with a toothache. But once settled into a campsite on our final evening on the road, the celebratory alcohol was poured. The day involved a nice lunch stop at Ambush Park, in Benson, Minnesota. With no one around, Jim, Robin and Dingo walked around – there is even camping there, when in season. I was bored … Continue reading

Joey’s RV Blog, Day 4: Sleeping At The Wahpeton, ND Zoo in Chahinkapa Park

OCTOBER 10, 2011 WAHPETON, NORTH DAKOTA – STARTING MILEAGE 109,069 / ENDING MILEAGE 109,390 We left the Walmart in Minot, North Dakota, bright and early, heading for our next destination – the zoo. Crikey, can you believe these people?! Yes, we were going to be driving from Minot almost to the Minnesota border, in a town called Wahpeton, North Dakota. These people I drive around must be missing the wilds of Montana already, needing to camp right outside of a zoo. Anyway, today is when we left Highway 2 and took the “scenic route” all day. They had me going 20 miles here, 50 miles there. Honest. we took something like 52 to 281, a short and horrifying jaunt on Interstate 94 for a few miles, off onto the scenic byway of straight up and down hills (if they only knew I got about one mile to the gallon doing … Continue reading

RV Parking At Walmart, Minot, ND – Day 3 Of Our Cheap RVing Journey

OCTOBER 9, 2011 WALMART IN MINOT, ND – STARTING MILEAGE 108,730 / ENDING MILEAGE 109,069 Day three – a lovely day for a Fleetwood Bounder like me. We left Malta, Montana with clear skies, open roads (and the dingo still acting as copilot). We flew down the highway with the grace of a croc floating on water. Passing through Glasgow and Wolf Point, Montana, we were recognizing our time in Montana was almost over. Then US Highway 2 sort of disappeared into what you see on the right. Just…gone. For miles and miles we bounced around like a Joey that ate too much sugar. Plates rattled, drawers slid open, the dingo looked ill because she was unable to stay on four paws. It wasn’t the best part of our journey. We crossed into North Dakota, amazed at all of the oil “pop up” towns everywhere. Never seen so many rvs … Continue reading

Trafton Park, Malta, Montana – Day Two In Our Frugal RVing Journey

OCTOBER 8, 2011 TRAFTON PARK IN MALTA, MONTANA – STARTING MILEAGE 108,456 / ENDING MILEAGE 108,730 Greetings, Mates! After a tearful goodbye to Marias Pass and Glacier National Park, we headed east on Highway 2. Did I mention we are making this journey to Illinois taking all of the back roads? No interstates for Joey! A much more peaceful driving experience in a motorhome, vs. the crazy urban people that make my tranny oil boil over. I do have quite a temper sometimes, so it is best to keep me on two lane roads in the bush. Our travels east took us through East Glacier, Browning, Cut Bank (as you can see in the photo), Shelby and other little remote villages I forget. We, or should I say “I” drove about 280 miles, with the dingo standing on my center console the entire trip. She is a bit hyper, and … Continue reading

Leaving Glacier National Park: RV Camping At Summit Campground, Marias Pass

JOEY’S JOURNAL ENTRY: DAY ONE OCTOBER 7, 2011 – STARTING MILEAGE 108,372 / ENDING MILEAGE 108,456 Today is the day we leave Montana. Crikey! I can see why Ward, my travel trailer cousin, used to get so frustrated with these people. G’day everyone – this is Joey, Jim and Robin’s 1993 Fleetwood Bounder motorhome, here to blog about our journey from Glacier National Park, Montana, to Illinois. Since June of 2011, we’ve been living in Moose Crossing campground, in Marion, Montana. A lot of changes happened. Ward (their Award travel trailer and my cousin) and June (their Nissan Frontier) got hitched and moved away, replaced by “yours truly.” They also lost their traveling companion, Clementine – an adorable yellow lab or “dingo” as I call all them all. A lot of loss, but they gained me! So after months residing in Marion, the day has come and it is time … Continue reading
